Q1.Where is the best place to get a voltage reading of the alternator output?

A:You'll get the most accurate voltage reading from the back of the alternator at the main charge post that runs directly to the battery. The measurement must be performed with the engine running.

Q2.Will I need a new battery with a high amp alternator?

A:If your battery is in good condition, and in specification of its OEM rating, then no need to change.

Q3.Why is the pulley on a high amp alternator smaller than my stock pulley?

A:The smaller pulley marginally improves the alternator's power curve, generating increased amperage output at idle RPM when required.

Q4.Do I need a larger charge wire for a High Output unit?

A: The high-amperage unit will outperform stock alternators, but requires upgraded charge wiring to achieve full performance. Just as fire trucks demand industrial-grade hoses, your high-output system needs properly sized charge and ground cables for optimal operation.

Q5.Does a High Amp unit cause any damage to my battery or my vehicles charging system?

A:Provided the unit is correctly installed with a healthy battery, a high-output alternator operates identically to a factory unit—only producing the amperage demanded by the electrical system. Like all alternators, it never continuously operates at maximum output. While increased amperage capacity poses no risk to batteries, excessive voltage (>15V for most 12V systems) can cause catastrophic battery failure.

Q6.Will I need a smaller belt for my high amp unit?

A: This varies depending on the specific application because not all belts and belt tensioners are in the same condition. The tensioner will always tell you if you need a new belt or not. If it's in range, you will not. If it is out of range, you will. Normally, you will need a belt that is 1 inch shorter than original. V-belt systems require tension adjustment to achieve 3/8" (9.5mm) deflection under standard test conditions.

A: Yes. If wired and mounted correctly, the alternator can run in either dual or triple applications.
